Pilot devices refers to a group products used to provide a human to machine interface (HMI) for systems like manufacturing operations or building climate controls. Pushbuttons, switches and lights are all pilot devices. Programmable logic controllers (PLC) are computers that continuously monitor input data and make decisions. We use PLCs in many applications from automating factory assembly-lines to dimming a light fixture. Devices and controllers require control panels to label and organize them.
Enclosures provide the control panels with security and separate them from environmental conditions. In some cases, enclosures require installation in hazardous locations where flammable gases or liquids are present.
Easter-Owens designs and fabricates control panels and enclosures from raw materials or modifies Hoffman or Rittal brand enclosures. The National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) defines a Class 1 hazardous location as where fire or explosion hazards may exist due to flammable gases or liquids. NFPA separates this classification into two zones or divisions.
- Division (Zone) 1 is where ignitable concentrations of flammable gases or vapors may exist under normal operating conditions.
- Division (Zone) 2 is where volatile flammable liquids or flammable gases are handled, processed or used, but the hazardous liquids, vapors or gases will normally be confined within closed containers or closed systems from which they can escape only in the event of accidental rupture or breakdown of such containers or systems, or as a result of abnormal operation of equipment.
Class 1 hazardous locations use purge systems which deliver a continuous input of air into an enclosure to prevent flammable vapors from accumulating. Easter-Owens produces enclosures for Class 1, Division 1 hazardous locations and purge panels for Class 1, Divisions 1 and 2 hazardous locations.
